District 9 encompasses the Niagara peninsula from Grimsby to Niagara Falls. As well, it includes the Dunnville Horticultural Society located in Haldimand County. There are thirteen societies in the District.

In District 9, we garden in a variety of conditions ranging in Zones from 5 to 6. Some areas are quite sheltered and many exotic plants are grown here by adventurous gardeners.

We have two meetings per year, one being our AGM in the spring, usually the last Saturday of April and the other the Fall Forum, usually held on the last Saturday in September. Both meetings have speakers and flower/and or Photo competition shows. Information and schedules are available under "Spring AGM and Fall Forum".

Since we have all been subjected to the constraints of COVID over the last couple of years, I would like to update the D9 web site page starting first with the highlighting of particular activities now planned, or being planned,  in celebration of 2022 The Year of the Garden.

I don’t want to take up a lot of your time, but would ask you to think about and send me a few words that highlight a (1 or 2) planned event that you are excited about and that will engage your members to:

“LIVE THE GARDEN LIFE,” and, or  OHA’s GROW RED 2022!

For example, In Thorold, we are organizing a 2022 Garden Contest. The launch date will coincide with June 18th’s National Garden Day across Canada. Winners will be announced at a TBA event in September, hopefully at an ‘in-person’ meeting this fall.

Some plans could include a membership drive, garden tour, plant sale, special zoom presentation, garden tea party, a partnership with another group, municipality, business or school, or any other special event, either using ZOOM,  in-person or combination of both, that will help to re-engage our members in our love of gardening.

<It is time to celebrate and cautiously move on, remaining respectful of COVID as it hopefully becomes an endemic disease as common as a cold or the flu.

Let’s advertise that we are here and like the spring are ready for re-birth and new beginnings!
